Press Release: APCUK Hosts ِAn Open Discussion on the Palestinian Situation – Past, Present, and Future
London, UK — February 15, 2024– The Association of the Palestinian Community in the UK organised an open discussion on Palestinian situations: “The Past, Present, and Future” The event was a thought-provoking discussion featuring a panel of scholars, diplomats, and experts. The event explored the historical context, current political realities, and prospects of Palestine, offering a critical examination of the challenges faced by the Palestinian people.
The panel included Prof. Ilan Pappé, a leading historian known for his work on Palestinian history and his critiques of Israeli colonial policies; Mr Afif Safieh, a former Palestinian diplomat and retired ambassador; Dr. Nehad Khanfar, Palestinian academic and the Chairman of the Association of the Palestinian Community in the UK; and Dr. Ghada Karmi, a Palestinian-born academic, physician and author.
During the discussion, the speakers addressed pressing issues such as the ongoing Israeli violations of Palestinian rights focusing on the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip and the deepened colonial policies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the role of international diplomacy, and the portrayal of Palestine in global media. They examined the historical roots of the Palestinian struggle, the impact of recent political developments, and the broader implications for justice and self-determination.
Our guest, Pappé, spoke about the policy of ethnic cleansing embedded in the ideology of Zionism, explaining that it was not merely an event that took place during the Nakba of 1948, but rather an ongoing strategy that Israel seeks to reenact, particularly in light of Trump’s plan to take over Gaza. He stated, “Ethnic cleansing was not just a chapter of the past; it is an ongoing project. Today, we see increasing calls to repeat what happened in 1948, this time under a new political framework aimed at emptying Gaza of its people.”
The event targeted a diverse audience, including activists, academics, students, and Palestinian and wider UK community members. The discussion allowed attendees to engage with the experts, ask critical questions, and deepen their understanding of the Palestinian cause. The panellists emphasized the importance of global solidarity, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization in advancing Palestinian rights on the international stage.

الجالية الفلسطينية في المملكة المتحدة تنظم مؤتمرا حول الوضع الفلسطيني – الماضي، الحاضر، والمستقبل
لندن، المملكة المتحدة – 15 فبراير 2024 – عقدت رابطة الجالية الفلسطينية في المملكة المتحدة ندوة بعنوان “الوضع الفلسطيني: الماضي، الحاضر، والمستقبل”، حيث اشتمل المؤتمر على مناقشة فكرية بمشاركة نخبة من الأكاديميين والدبلوماسيين والخبراء. استكشف الحدث السياق التاريخي، والواقع الحالي، والآفاق المستقبلية للقضية اللفلسطينية، مقدمًا تحليلًا نقديًا للتحديات التي يواجهها الشعب الفلسطيني.
وضمَّت الندوة كلاً من البروفيسور إيلان بابيه، المؤرخ والاكاديمي البارز والمعروف بأبحاثه حول تاريخ فلسطين ومؤلفاته المعارضة للاحتلال الإسرائيلي وسياساته؛ والاستاذ عفيف صافية، الدبلوماسي والسفير الفلسطيني السابق والاكاديمي الفلسطيني الدكتور نهاد خنفر، رئيس رابطة الجالية الفلسطينية في المملكة المتحدة؛ والدكتورة غادة الكرمي، الأكاديمية والطبيبة والكاتبة الفلسطينية.
خلال المناقشة، تناول المتحدثون قضايا ملحّة تشمل الانتهاكات الاسرائيلية المستمرة للحقوق الفلسطينية وصولا الى الابادة الجماعية التي شهدها قطاع غزة، وتوسع الهجمات الشرسة لجيش الاحتلال ضد الضفة الغربية والقدس الشرقية، دور الدبلوماسية الدولية، وصورة فلسطين في الإعلام العالمي. كما ناقشوا الجذور التاريخية للنضال الفلسطيني، وتأثير التطورات السياسية الأخيرة، والآثار الأوسع نطاقًا على قضايا العدالة وتقرير المصير.
تحدث البروفيسور إيلان بابيه عن سياسة التطهير العرقي المتجذرة في أيديولوجية الصهيونية، موضحًا أنها لم تكن مجرد حدث وقع خلال نكبة 1948، بل هي نهج مستمر تسعى إسرائيل إلى إعادة تطبيقه، لا سيما في ضوء خطة ترامب للسيطرة على غزة. وقال بابيه: “التطهير العرقي لم يكن مجرد فصل من الماضي، بل هو مشروع مستمر، حيث نرى اليوم دعوات متزايدة لإعادة تنفيذ ما حدث عام 1948، وهذه المرة تحت غطاء سياسي جديد يهدف إلى تفريغ غزة من سكانها.”
